I'd like to dust off my rusty digital electronics & microcontroller skills. I looked at the PIC's, and even built a programmer kit for them, but I find them kind of annoying to actually use. I played around with a 8031 several years ago (Hmmm... More like 15+ years ago...). I remember it was rather powerful, but I needed a traditional eprom programmer & UV eraser, which I no longer have access to. To make things worse, I mostly develop on a Mac and "big Unix iron", and would like to avoid Windows if at all possible.

Has anyone ever successfully programmed the public domain MCS52 BASIC image in a 89S8252 via the serial programming interface? It seems like it would make a useful "monitor", coupled with some RAM & EEPROM. I could then use it to debug circuits, bootstrap other chips, or program eproms/eeproms.

New Micros Inc http://www.newmicros.com/ does an 8051 development board with RAM and EPROM complete with Basic. Look at their NMIY-0031 product. I have one of these with just a monitor program installed and use it with my Linux only laptop. See my 8052.com page http://www.8052.com/users/redtommo for details of how to use this and other 8052 stuff under Linux.
