The Windows GUI loop is co-operative - when you write event code for Windows it has to do what it needs and get out otherwise the GUI grinds to a halt. That used to be true of Win3.x & 9x - meaning that one dead task could hang the whole machine - but not of NT and its successors (2k, XP) Win3.x was basically co-operative, whereas NT et al are preemptive. Of course, you can still write Modal dialogues that force the task or system to wait for a response. |
