If you want to find out more about real time, what it means and so on then a good place to start is the real time FAQ which you can find at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/realtime-computing/faq/

Under the 'What is Real Time' heading this says 'There are several definitions of real-time,

For those who don't want to spend time reading the FAQ referenced above, there are basically two definitions of 'real time'.

Soft real time is when failure to meet a deadline degrades the system. An example would be video streaming. If a frame isn't received in time, the video may be choppy.

Hard real time is when a missed deadline means failure of the system. An example would be a controller in a refinery. If the controller receives indication of a fire and fails to close valves within a prescribed time limit, the result could be a massive explosion.

Neither definition implies fast. A real time data logger may be required to log data only once every 10 seconds. But if the data must be logged, it's real time.
