This "logarithmic amplifier" seems totally new for me. Can you please give me some more information / links so that I can learn about them.

I never used a logarithmic amplifier, just considered them a few times many moons ago.

I had a quick glance at the google results referred above and they show it very well.

Again, it was long ago, but I do believe that (was it Burr-Brown or AD) some chipmaker(s) integrates the whole thing in one chip. I saw on the google list the MAX4602 is such a device covering 5 decades of input.
