#90278 - To DIL or not to DIL
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Hey Jan,

What's wrong with DIL?

Nothing wrong with the DIL version of course, on the contrary, I would say.
I just wanted to mention that I still have such an old-fashioned device, becomes quite rare nowadays... ;-)

Different question: what would you do with the extra 24 pins in the DIN connector?

Let me try to explain how I would see it, after I had a look to the very useful links to other devboards in this thread.

It would be interesting, if you could do the complete development of your own board, inclusief the MCU socket. So, don't mount the MCU itself yet. The socket could be whatever you like/have/...

By using adaptor sockets, you could overcome the problem of the different types of sockets that exists.

Next, the -what you call- devboard could be something that you can plug into your almost-ready design.

I say almost ready since everything would be there, except the processor. This one would be temporarily be replaced by a -let me call it- development probe that you put in the MCU socket.

Then, this development probe could be connected to some intelligent device, that is connected to the PC and with which you could do debugging, like putting breakpoints etc.

To me, that would be a very nice and useful tool, especially since you immediately test your final hardware too, which is not always the case if you're using the eval. boards of many manufacturers.

Best rgds,

--Geert
