"what is wrong with DIL"
For someone using 5 chips and 11.0592 crystals with no interest in 8 port derivatives - nothing put your large user hat on. Would you use a package that took square inches of board space rather than one that used square centimeters? Would you use a package where the internal leads were long enough for you to have to include them in your calculations or one with short internal leads? Someone, I think Kai, had a post a while ago showing the noise suspectability of a DIL because of the long internal leads. Now take that hat off and put your semiconductor manufacturer hat on Would you make chips according to the wishes of 10.000 users, each buying 5 chips or for 5 users each buying 1.000.000 chips? hats off Thus many new derivatives and many not so new e.g. the P89C66x are not available in DIL. I also forsee the demise of all socketable packages in the near future. But the, I am no psychic and may be wrong there. Erik |
