The circuit I posted here was designed to give a relatively fast acting mains detect signal. If this rather fast acting is not needed, then of course your DC output wallwart can be used. I guess, you mean this thing which includes a bridge rectifier and electrolytic? This would hold the signal for a rather long period of time, when not being discharged by rather low impedance.
