"Ultra" high-speed ??? compared to the SILabs f12x derivatives they are slowpokes.
Dallas/Maxim touts them "Ultra High-speed", but compared to Atmel, you'll only get 50-70% of the performance, if counting in MIPS.

Nevertheless, they are fine for many things.

Now, if a simulator is associated (I do not know if that is the case with SDCC), some activities may not be simulated.
Citing the SDCC website http://sdcc.sourceforge.net:
SDCC also comes with the source level debugger SDCDB, using the current version of Daniel's s51 simulator.
there seems to be some form of simulator packaged with the compiler.
