Hi Prahalad,
Got your ideas. Well I hade done like this:

Vss, ---/////////---- Contrast pin
Variable end
also grounded

I read the datasheet of JHD 164D from Payam's user pages.(Thanks, Payam, it was very handy). It has been said that contrast pin can have a minimum value of Vdd(minus)13.5 volts, and the maximum of zero volts.

Name____________________symbol___Min_________Max
Supply Voltage for logic_______Vdd____-0.3________7.0 V
Supply Voltage for LCD_______V5 _____Vdd-13.5_____0 V

Does this imply that maximum contrast is obtained when contrast pin is grounded ?

Are you sure you did what you mentioned here. The right way to do it is.

5k/10k mutiturn
Vss[0V]--////////------Vcc[5V]
Pin1 ^ Pin2
|
|
PIN3 [Contrast]

Well, if the above arrangement is made, Prahalad, I am afraid that the contrast pin can go upto Vcc. Doesnt this damage the module?

Regards,
Vignesh.
