But I believe such answers wont make my friend agree why a soft swtiching for resistive loads.

get him to agree (with what you say - I doubt you can) that switching the power on at nonzero makes one side of a square wave. Square waves are discussed all over.

Then google for square wave harmonics and you will find things like this
