#97007 - Schematic of a simple filter

...funnily enough, our adsl router at the astronomy centre
http://www2.astronomycentre.org.uk blew up last week, from line transients !! But then we are on the end of 3 km of overhead cable.

That's the circuit I would recommend to Mehdi:

The given surge suppressor allows 10kA to flow. But for your overhead cable, Steve, I would recommend a much much higher rating!
From http://www.compliance-club.com I learned, that overhead cables can carry hundreds of volts, even if no lightning directly strikes the cable. Just from electrostatical fields, when a thunderstorm is arround. So, from this I would say a real strong filter should be used, which is able to shunt charge to earth over and over again during a thunderstorm.
