#97218 - OT? the road paved with burned chips.
I am starting this as a new thread although triggered by the College for embedded systems thread.

I think the College for embedded systems can only be reached via the road paved with burned chips.

The unfortunate fact about '51 fluency is that it can only be acquired by experience. I know of no college or other institution that do, or even can, teach you that.

Thus I think it could be intersting and educational to know what background some of us had when we did our first '51 design

yours truly:
designed several TTL driven devices, some with embedded minicomputers (no microcomputers existed) then got into COM (minicomputer and TTL) as a combined soft- and hardware guy that slowly drifted to software only. After ~10 years of writing software for various minicomputers and the PC, I (being the only guy in the company, I then worked for, that knew what is front and back on a resistor) ran into a problem where no hardware to solve existed. Accumulating a few datasheets I found out that a '51 based solution would be just right. So, I burned a few microcontrollers and ended up with a working design. Well my next job was to make a PC talk to 51 '51s on a knitting machine, I were the only applicant for the job that even knew what a '51 was. The rest is history
