#97224 - solitary studies

I think the College for embedded systems can only be reached via the road paved with burned chips.

The unfortunate fact about '51 fluency is that it can only be acquired by experience. I know of no college or other institution that do, or even can, teach you that.

Yes, burned chips and a good background.

Thus I think it could be intersting and educational to know what background some of us had when we did our first '51 design

I'm not quite sure I got the main point of this thread, and my knowlede/experience is not comparable to that of big boys here, but:
I looked at my self writing TurboC programs similar to Norton's SysInfo. Then thought it's useless to write programs with no practical use except playing with a PC. Making a profitable LED display entrepreneurial company became my excuse to leave the university. My first LED sign was a 10x7 connected to PC parallel port. Then a 16x64 one (sold 3) totally with glue logic(no uCs). With my reach C experience and crippled knowledge of electronics. So I launched what is now called 'Operation Do It' by historians. The electronic era began in my life. Came the 8051 and my solitary studies. The 32x128 one connected to PC parallel port (sold one:() Then this new one turned out to be a 24x288+ one powerred by a 6+ month pdfing.
