I totally agree with you Erik. If you think about it, there is really not much to "book learn" with regards to the 8051. Once you know have read how all the Assembly instructions work, C, how the architecture is laid out, how to use a timer, etc, etc. All in all, I couldn't see how a dedicated college could really do more than a semester or two on such a subject.
Once you have aquired the basics, you must indeed get your feet wet (over and over and over). As discussed in the college thread, a school can only offer you so much. If you want to succeed and truly learn the art of small embedded systems, your going to have to work on projects (professional or not) outside of the typical curriculum. Dedication and love is a must for this field. Anyway, its interresting hearing the different stories. I think in all cases, there is an obvious common thread amoung those that will succeed in embedded development. Tomas |
