I don't think Bert has a problem creating the needed precise timing in PC, if he claims he has 5ms delay now. While PC, notabene with WinXY fitted, is not intended and not quite suitable for this level of "real-time-ness", it is not impossible to achieve sub-ms precision in timing events (with maybe ocassional dropouts, which the network protocol must be tolerant for).
I think he was asking for recommendation on timing rather than architecture. Unfortunately, my experience is from a smaller in nodes but larger in length 485 network with sometimes uncontrollable cabling (yes, the customer insisted he will make it himself and made it as star and it is already in the wall) and it doesn't need to be so fast, so we rather play on the safe side (low speeds, high delays)...
