Thank you one and all for your input and suggestions. They are all very much appreciated.

Erik, your idea for a RS485 master sounds like a winner. Using this method insures good control of the RS485 buss with minimal switching delays. It means having an 8051 with two UART's or two interconnected 8051's with one UART each. Do you have any words of wisdom in that respect?
