Yes, ATMEL was extremely successful with the AT89C51 years ago, because of combining the '51-core with their own flash memory technology. They were the first doing this to my knowledge.
Yes, they were the first and what a piece of s#!+ they made. If I recall correctly the last revision of the chip (2-3 YEARS after the introduction) was revision S and there was still a "small errata". I was forced to abandon this chip somewhere around revision 'g'.
