#117614 - DEC even called some "micro-computers" Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Notably the PDP-8 was called a mini, but the LSI-11 family up to the 11-34 were often called micro's in DEC literature.
The PDP-8 was a great machine in it's day, and found its way into many domestic telephone switches which to my surprise were still in use in 1989. The big difference between a PDP-8 or -11's was I/O. Even today with our "wonder-dog" Pentiums it is a laugh to stop the world with just a floppy or CD i/o operation. This is of course, architecturally based, and the robustness of the DEC i/o method was equally architectural, making machines that didn't execute at a single MIP to perform wonderfully. regards, p |
