Intel INVENTED the family! It was an enhanced outgrowth of the 8748 series. The latter was the FIRST fully integrated single-chipper, with ROM, RAM, and processor on the same chip.

There was a big spread in a late (September?) 1978 issue of Scientific American that featured it.
