The PISO/SIPO pair does only one thing. It transfers the 8 bits last loaded into the PISO to its output and makes the SIPO content available if you have the means to detect when that's the case. The '597/'595 pair can do that, albeit not without some help of one sort or another.
You just named one "feature" that the PISO/SIPO pair wouldn't support. It could be added, as could 9-bit communication, etc, but not without a considerable amount of hardware and/or firmware. That's what the SPI support in some chips provides. As mentioned before, it's not the current topic, though. RE |
