Do not approach the UART as something you know, apparoach it as a brand new strange animal.

That'll be the important one for me!

I gather you are looking for an USB slave

Correct.

I am currently working with a FTDI USB master and making wondeful progress - more later.

I've been looking at that, but no progress as the particular devkit I wanted turned out to be vapourware. :-(
But things are looking up now... :-)
Maybe more later...

Since you are stating "a one-off" why not just use a regular chip and a FTDI USB slave 'converter', they are cheap enough that if they save you one hour of development time, you are ahead.

Yes, I know the FTDI slave devices (you'll get many hits searching here for "FTDI neil").
As it is a one-off, I think I'll be better off if I can just get an SiLabs devkit off-the shelf with everything ready to go.
I could be wrong, of course...
