Re. 3: Documentation responses
Does this mean we can no longer point newbies to "the bible"? Or to read the datasheet? I think "didn't search first" does not carry enough information to get the poster to read the right document. If I know something is in a certain document do I really have to go find the exact chapter for him/her? You can still point to documents, definitely. If you cite a specific page, the response will be considered (from a moderation standpoint) adequate on its face. If, as Erik asked, someone has such a vague question as "How do I use timers?" then I have no problem with a response as vague as "Read the timers chapter in the Bible, here's the link." If someone is so lost that really reading the entire Bible and getting a clue is the only thing that will save them, I'd still prefer the previous two options; another option is to ignore them completely since a lack of response will force them to do read material anyway. The preferable response, though, is to to reasonably (without spending too much of your own valuable time) answer the question and if you also want to mention reading an entire specific document, fine. I just tire of seeing messages that the entire response is "read the Bible." At least give them some guidance and tell them to read the Bible. If you think that's more of your time than the poster deserves, ignore the question. Re. 4: The use of SMS
Is it maybe a good idea to add a score to indicate SMS is discouraged? It doesn't have to be a negative rating. Something like "No SMS please". I guess that can be done. I'll be adding a few more voting categories over the weekend and I'll consider this. I'm not entirely convinced, though. It seems like too much focus on form rather than substantive issues. I hate SMS and all-caps posting too, but if we try to live by the "Don't be easily annoyed" rule then we should be able to ignore such trivial presentation problems. The person using SMS isn't probably trying to intentionally annoy anyone and the person that writes in all caps probably doesn't mean to shout. So if we just pass those cases through our own "Relax, don't worry" filter, we should be able to be a little more tolerant. Regards, Craig Steiner 8052.com Webmaster |
