Many transit specifications use a factor of 2 for margin. Twice the required processor speed, twice the required memory, use no more than one half of the power supply rated output, no more than one half of the output driver rated load, and so on. I am guessing that '2x' was pulled out of the air by someone, and it stuck.
You have to account for feature creep. This should not happen to any significant extent at the outset, if the spec is well written. However, products will often be updated and 'improved' over time, and it is wise to have resources available for these future product variants. |
