Hi Erik,

Back when they were the only telecommunications company in America, AT&T made a habit of running a spare pair of conductors for every pair they needed. That's why your house phone jacks have the yellow and black pair. It seemed to work for them. They saved countless man-hours of replacing damaged cables by always having a spare pair in waiting.
