ftdi makes chips that convert serial and/or parallel to USB and supply the software all you do is feeding the ftdi chip.

No: those chips are for connecting to a PC, where the microcontroller is a USB slave

To drive a USB printer from a microcontroller would require the micro to be a USB host

I don't think any of the Vinculum variants are for driving printers, are they...?
