BUT I had contacted three different printer companies and asked them to recommend a printer and tell me what codes are necessary to make the printer print and not one printer company bothered to respond

If you contacted "PC printer" companies, I'm not surprised, try googling for things like "ticket printer", "status printer", "label printer" and such to get the companies that actually make printers for small embedded systems.
