#155435 - Health of USB Serial Drivers Responding to: ???'s previous message |
I have observed the issues of driver reliability with USB to RS232 cables over the years that these things have been available. I can say that Prolific's drivers have gotten much better than they originally were. But even adapters that use FTDI and Cypress controllers have been improving too. The chips used, the concepts applied, and adaption to user experience are all areas that have continued to improve.
One area that is still a problem....mobile phone download/sync cables that use some of the same chips as the general purpose adapters but the maker has tried to hide and/or customize the usage model in their drivers / software. At the same time however the mobile phone driver thinks that an inserted standard cable is phone adapter cable. I have seen one instance where I have to unplug all my USB-Serial cables in order to even use the phone sync cable. Michael Karas |
