Hi Tony,

First of all thanks for the help (also another big thanks goes to Erik and others which helped till the very beginning of this post). Yeah I have a current limited (linear) power supply (custom built 4 years ago at our institute). Hmmm good idea, I'll try burning a program that sens serial data but it's a little difficult since my problem in the first place is that the 89c51 doesn't allow the in-system programmer to connect most of the times. I'll dedicate a few hours on the hardware tonight. maybe I can track down the fault (faults?). If I do then I will most certainly follow your advice. Currently I'm writing the project dissertation which is VERY BORING indeed. Thanks again.
