The only really problematic thing for the software in regards to multiplexing is to adjust the intensity of individual diodes - something that I can't see easily solved with any other drive method, unless I have the advantage of having a single processor pin / LED.

If you can't "adjust the intensity of individual diodes" how do you propose to produce colors?
