Why do I "hate" the 82.. chips ?
I have had to "fix" more designs because of the use of 82.. chips than anything else. They will bite you in your largest muscle because of their timing idiosyncracies, you will find that something in codeline 4711 does not work becuse of something in codeline 152.
If you are willing to put a 5 (or is it less) xtal in your design, I believe you may be able to use a 82.. chip witout problems.

PS maybe someone can release a "8255 PLD" here, that, at least would take care of the timing issues.
