Back to the "why can't you use an LED" part of the cooling fan thread. It looked like a proper white LED would be fine for your application.

Can you draw the circuit ? You have to make sure that the impedance of the transistor is always << than the impedance of the divider chain, so that changes with temperature in the transistor don't affect the output voltage. Failing that, a relay will do the job !
