You are right.
I assumed you mean a key which reside nearby the microcontroller.


For control signals over long lines and with high levels I use always also a protection circuit.

I use opto couplers (e.g. PC817) to feed signals from outside to the heart of my gadget.

Was the 6818 able to give an almost similiar protection level ?
