Nice with so much debate, and so manny inputs.

I think, that the main conclusion is, that it depends!

There is no global answer; its enterily application dependent.

I dont need isolation, so I dont think opto couplers is a good idea. I could use software debounce; as in a lot of things, the micro will be idle for most of the time. I will need some sort of input multiplexing - i dont have 16 free input pins, and I sure need ESD protection.

My only main concern is the lack of a second source for this chip. On the other hand, this is a small production - 25 pcs or so. What I will need is 50 pcs. of 6818, and if they are available of the shelf, I go for hat solution.
