Me too! I normaly use the verry same optocoupler. But you need the opto, and at least two diodes - 1n400x, and a resistor. And you would use your micro to debounce and so on. Maxim states that the 6818 is ESD safe up to +- 15 kV. I am not shure that our opto set up will accept that, and still be working.

And - as Steve wrote - the 6818 will kick your micro when there is work to be donne.
