Now that most members have expressed their views and it generally transpires that there EXISTS a certain commercial interest in what Philips is doing, we may as well close this thread.

Irrespective of what Philips or Cypress recommend or don't, a good design will warrant a Reset controller for any MCU with a Flash memory. Period.
