This might be a reason when you start doing from zero and have good experience with some cores. But if you good know only MCU51 and have many projects already done for this core then I doubt that some cents per chip may compensate the cost of time taken for learning and porting that all. Always remember that time costs money too. Another contra: working on similar projects for two different cores simultaneously increases work time - you may not "copy-paste" parts of programs, may not use common libraries etc. Finally, this way makes brains crazy (= I don't see any off-topic in comparing any architecture to '51; either pointing out strengths or weaknesses of the '51 in a given context.
