Yes I agree

I want to stick with a '51 architecture as I know this and port code between 51 uC is heaps easier than changing platform completely.

As far as the cost is concerned, I suppose that I can justify the differential between the LPC and the 2051 by not needing the following, Crystal, Watchdog?, External EEPROM. all a saving as they come inbuilt in the LPC,

The inputs are also 5v tolerant. so not too much of an issue migrating. just a zener, on the VCC?
