SMD = + cost (in given design/manufacturing environment(!))
board space = +cost, but often negligible
3.3V = too often +cost (btw. are the LPC9xx 5V tolerant?)
parts that needs to be hunted = +cost
parts that are not widely used and may have bugs = +cost
conversion from 51 to AVR = easy

This, and many others have to be considered carefully from case to case
