Gerber is a fine way to publish a fixed design, that isn't Mike's beef, but Gerber is NOT fine as a method of transmitting a reference design.

EasyPC amongst others will export .DXF (autocad files) but I have found that importing them into anything else is a sod.

ARE there package independent file formats for PCB DESIGNS, as opposed to artwork.
