It is actually an (A)T89C51RD2/ED2 and was debugged on a similar board I sent the link just now (actually, it was their ethernet-on-'51 project, but I never used the ethernet chip).

You can wire it up - just a socket for the RD2, a MAX232 or similar with the accompanying capacitors, some reset and power circuitry and perhaps a bunch of LEDs for fun - on a protoboard within an hour or so. Another half an hour to figure out the bootloader. With less experience this all maybe two or three hours, including a couple of questions here. A binary-clock on the LEDs is running within an another hour, if you ever heard of BASIC.

But if this all fulfills your definition of a SBC accomplishing "simple tasks", sorry, I don't know...
