Another possibility for a small amount of memory that is non-volatile would be to look at a part such as a 93C46. These parts are very low cost and are, in my opinion, somewhat easier to get working due to their simpler SPI type interface. The 93C46 offers sixty four 16-bit words of storage but there are other parts in the family that hold more.
