I guess that depends on contrast and the LCD then. I'm looking at my LCD right now and regardless of what angle I look at it, I see no darkishness once it's initialized unless I increase the contrast.

Your mileage may vary, but I don't think the absence of that darkishness can be an absolute indicator of improper initialization.

For what it's worth, his initialization sequence is initializing my LCD just fine.
