#103874 - RS485 loops are hungry... Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I'm currently developing a system which has a total power budget of 24mW, including a RS485 transceiver. Assume 120 Ohm termination resistors at both ends of RS485 loop, which yields a total impedance of 60 Ohm, then 2V signal amplitude results in a signal current of 33mA and a power dissipation of 2V^2 / 60 Ohm = 67mW at the resistors! Voltage drop across internal driver transistors additionally consumes power... Take care, during short circuit conditions much much higher currents can be drawn. I have seen a few RS485 applications totally omitting the termination resistors at both ends, using slew rate limited RS485 drivers in combination with very short cables. But this cannot be recommended at all, because results are rather unpredictable... Kai |
