Then there is absolute no joke on it, if you try to make the hardware work as easy as possible.

Thus I prefer always the easy way with 74HC165 and 74HC595 for input and output expansion.

It's many times easier to place about 10 lines of code for the SPI routine instead hundred of wires on your pcb.
