#129892 - OK, expanded Responding to: ???'s previous message |
by that definition monitors would qualify to be ICEs - they run real time on real hardware, too
OK, the definition of an ICE expanded: "runninbg real time on real hardware with the software to be released in the final product" monitors .. indeed, some manufacturers of devtools like to call them ICEs (see e.g. http://www.8052.com/forum/read.phtml?id=128552 ) If you can call some piece of crap something valuable, some poor sod may be stupid enough to buy it. The point that made me "define" ICE was your statement "even that's not REAL ICE as you don't have a trace available." I do not consider trace a requirement for an ICE. When I have used ICEs with trace, I have 98.17% of the time found that the value of a trace was negative as you spend hours poring over the trace before you realize that you will not get any valuable information out of it. YES, there is the one rare case where a trace has value, but paying thousands of dollars more to get an ICE with trace is a bad ROI. Erik |
