Aha. Up until now I've been confused that the Atmel datasheet refers to SS (Slave Select) as an input signal whereas the Maxim datasheet refers to the microcontrollers CS (Chip Select) as being an output signal. I've just realised that maybe CS and SS aren't synonomous as I'd ass-u-me-d, and that maybe I shouldn't be using SS to drive CS, but I should be using a different port on the micro.

Give me a couple of hours and I'll report back.
