Well, not so much eureka, but good old-fashioned doing things right.

Jan, it was a metaphorical "get my soldering iron out", but actually I was using push-connect breadboard, which I have just consigned to the bin.

Veroboard prototype appears to work fine so far.

Many many many thanks to all for your invaluable assistance.

I'll post code when I'm sure it works.
