I'm learning to use DXP, and I'm told that it should be 'top-of-line' product (haven't compared it myself), auto-routing looks pretty powerful (for multi-layer boards, of course, almost does everything by itself) BUT so far, when manually routing single-side boards (or editing layout in any way) it reminds me of ChiWritter (remember those?) and their ability to draw tables/write equations, ever try to edit one afterwards? We use DXP here, and it's got its annoyances, especially when compared to PCAD (with which I'm more familiar). I hate DXP's library system, its ugly fonts and the fact that the print driver always defaults to A4 size. But all of these tools have their quirks. We don't use the autorouter, nor the FPGA integration (why don't they sell CAD packages WITHOUT the FPGA stuff). At the previous job we used the SPECCTRRA (or however it's spelled) autorouter with PCAD and it worked well enough for big boards with lots of buses. You need to spend time setting up your constraints so it doesn't do anything boneheaded. -a |
