Agree with you, Jan.

There is no problem on SPI trace of the MCU side.
And the command sequence is also fine to drive P22 on the MAX6957
That is, your firmware is fine, as long as SPI handling concerns.

Interestingly I don't seem to get any output from MISO (DOUT) either

It's a significant sign that you cannot miss.
Is the MAX6957 correctly powered?
