There's a lot of PC stuff written in Visual BASIC but, beyond the name, that bears virtually no resemblance whatsoever to the 1963 "BASIC" from Dartmouth College

evolution has taken a basically simple language and added and added and added till it became a true mess.

Using BASIC for what BASIC initially was intended for is one thing, but using 'modern' BASIC to read a file, sort it and write it back will illustarte how 'desperate' the 'creators' of the 'advanced functions' were to wrestle someting into a language that was never intended to do such stuff.
